Rush Touring North America In 2011, Once Again Performing ‘moving Pictures’ In Its Entirety

By Ryan D. Hogan

It’s a testament to Rush and their music that 30 years after the release of their seminal album, Moving Pictures, fans still want to hear them perform it live.

In 2010, Rush sold concert tickets to 37 markets in the United States and Canada. That tour, which featured the band performing all of Moving Pictures, began in late June in Albuquerque, New Mexico and finished in early October in West Palm Beach, Florida. Rush’s 2010 outing was one of the top rock tours of the year.

Come 2011, the legendary Canadian progressive rock trio will once again tour North America, and once again they will perform their masterpiece in its entirety.

Moving Pictures came out in February of 1981. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum in 1995 making it Rush’s most successful release. The record was produced by the band and longtime collaborator Terry Brown. The landmark album includes one of Rush’s most famous songs, “Tom Sawyer,” as well as fan favorites “Limelight” and “YYZ.”

The trio’s 2011 Time Machine Tour kicks off March 30 when Rush visits the Bank Atlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 13-date outing concludes April 22 when Rush plays the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.

Highlights of band’s upcoming schedule include Rush at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee on April 3; Rush at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on April 12; Rush at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on April 15; and Rush at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Michigan on April 17.

Of course the biggest stop on their itinerary is Rush’s April 10 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The entire trek is officially billed as “Time Machine Tour 2011 – An Evening With Rush, Featuring The Performance Of Moving Pictures In Its Entirety.” That should make for an interesting tour shirt.

In addition to playing the seven songs that comprise Moving Pictures (which runs about 40 minutes), fans with Rush tickets will also be treated to selections from the band’s impressive 35-plus-year catalog of music. Rush’s repertoire contains the classic songs “Closer to the Heart,” “New World Man,” and “Fly By Night.”

For every concert ticket sold, Rush will donate one dollar to Haitian relief efforts, including the charity Doctors Without Borders. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart will make another donation as soon as their tour is over.

Don’t hold your breath for additional North American dates. After rocking the states and the provinces, Rush rushes off to Europe for a series of concerts. Their European excursion begins May 4 in Finland and concludes May 29 in Frankfurt, Germany. While on the continent, Rush is set to visit Stockholm, Malmo, Dublin, Glasgow, Rotterdam, and several cities in the UK, including London.

Once the calendar flips, look for a new Rush album. The band’s forthcoming release, Clockwork Angels, is set to drop sometime in 2011.
